The 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to M’hamid El Ghizlan is an excellent option for those eager to experience the desert and its dunes within a short time. Although it may not quite match the grandeur of Merzouga or Chegaga dunes, it is still far superior to Zagora in terms of scenery and atmosphere. In fact, not only will you pass through incredible landscapes, but you will also witness relatively large dunes, a magnificent sunset and sunrise, and share authentic moments with local nomads. Additionally, the route is rich with attractions, offering a more immersive journey into southern Morocco.
From Marrakech to the Atlas Foothills
The tour begins in the lively city of Marrakech, gradually transitioning into the tranquil countryside. As you travel through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, the scenery continuously changes—both in color and form—creating a sense of constant visual discovery. Moreover, the road is dotted with perched Berber villages, offering glimpses into Morocco’s traditional mountain life.
Through Oases and the Draa Valley
Soon after, the landscape transforms again as you pass by several charming oases, leading to the vast Draa Valley—home to one of the largest palm groves in Morocco. Once you arrive in Zagora, the experience becomes even more magical. During sunset, enjoy a 40-minute camel ride, crossing scenic dunes to reach your bivouac camp behind the hills, where you’ll spend the night under a star-filled sky.
Return Journey with Cultural Highlights
On the second day, the return to Marrakech is equally rich in culture. Not only will you visit kasbahs in Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou, but you’ll also explore iconic film locations, adding an exciting cinematic dimension to your adventure. Eventually, you’ll head back to Marrakech with unforgettable memories.

Itinerary
Morning departure by car to Mhamid, crossing the high atlas mountains and driving along the ancient caravan route, arriving in Agdez in time for lunch. In the afternoon our sahara desert experience continues through Draa valley and Zagora. Once we arrive to Mhamid the gate to the desert you will ride camels for about an hour and a half. Enjoy the sunset from the top of the highest dune over the distant mountains, before the camels take us back to the bivouac of nomad tents for dinner and a night’s rest.
If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. After this, it’s back in the vehicle and set off to Ait Ben Haddou, a beautiful kasbah, often used as a movie location for Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator starring Russel Crowe. We have lunch here before making the drive back over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass and back to Marrakech.
